ARRRR you ready to celebrate!?
Wednesday, September 19 marks the 10-year anniversary of International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Accidently founded in June 1995, it began with a couple of mates (John Baur and Mark Summers) who unintentionally began yelling words of encouragement in pirate slang while playing a sporting game of racquetball. After years of local (as in a family living room) celebration, Talk Like a Pirate Day finally made its debut!
In 2002, John and Mark emailed Pulitzer Prize winner and syndicated humor columnist,
Dave Barry, suggesting the Talk Like a Pirate Day. They even offered him the official spokesmanship. Dave Barry thought it to be a “very excellent” proposal, wrote a column about it and that, me mateys, is how the holiday came to be!
International Talk Like a Pirate Day is celebrated every year on September 19 in 5 continents!
